Candy break!

This past week was spent working with a group of 13 youth and 3 adults from Fond Du Lac, WI, at 2 sites in Sparks. Monday through Wednesday the whole group was spent at the Caballero home, tearing off an old roof and putting on a new one. Thursday and Friday the group was divided: part of us did the same thing, only with the ceiling on the inside, and the rest went to the Morales's to finish up some odds and ends.

It was HOT! Not quite the hottest week of the summer, but we usually drank all of the water we brought and had to go fill up the coolers (thanks to Maria and the Community Center for the water and ice, respectively) even when we brought FOUR, and we were all a little worn out by the end of the week, especially Chris since he and I have been doing the same thing for going on 12ish weeks now. Something that helped get us all get through the week was candy breaks: whenever one of the chaperones yelled those words, everyone had to leave their post, even if they were on the roof, and come sit in the shade or the air-conditioned van for a mandatory 5-10 minute rest and some Gobstoppers, Lemon Heads, Mike & Ike's, Jujyfruits, Nerds, Bottle Caps, etc. Maybe there is something to this tradition!

No pictures of the candy breaks, but you HAVE to see how bad this roof was before we started on it and how good it looks now when you drive up:

OK...hold that thought...

Chris was on the ground heading up the cutting/fascia/edging crews, and I was at home on the roof, laying the OSB.

We had to be careful where we walked or we would wind up in the living room, like A.J. :)

A.J.'s hole!!!

I discovered that my new favorite construction job is shingling, even though we barely ever do it. Take roofing, subtract the tar (which I am just about over), and E-MAC is a happy camper. It's just REALLY hard to make it go in straight lines when there are a) approximately 10 people all overlapping differently; and b) a ginormous swamp cooler to work around!

Remember this one too...

Now compare...

A couple of the boys in the group with Joel, the homeowner who helped us out a TON on the roof and even lent us some of his tools.

Until next time, blessings!
