Human Care
Last week I had the privilege of helping host 11 Venezuelan pastors. The conversation started before my time, but basically, the idea was that, in light of the grave economic situation plaguing the entire country of Venezuela, something needed to be done to bolster those who steadfastly continue shining Christ's light. That idea became a reality in the form of a week-long retreat in the DR: strategic planning, training, fellowship, worship, rest, rejuvenation, encouragement, and much, much more.
It was truly a (last-minute, in many cases) team effort, but I took the lead on logistics. More so than that, though, my presence and that of the many others who pitched in throughout the week was one more way to epitomize "human care" for them.
Two carts later...Jamielynn, Jo, and I had groceries for the week under control.
Last Tuesday consisted of the first Venezuela FORO. Several collaborators from the US joined the pastors and selected members of the missionary team to discuss the present state of ministry in Venezuela as well as look to the future.
Rev. Herb Burch, the Area Facilitator whose role includes Venezuela, addressing the group after Vespers on Thursday.
The seminarians graciously hosted a BBQ at their dormitory building on Thursday evening.
On Saturday afternoon, I helped Danelle make dessert for Sunday's joint Reformation service. Inspired by Venezuelan seminary student Isaac, we tried our hand at a Venezuelan delicacy called marquesa de chocolate.
So. Many. Pastors. Each participated by leading a portion of the liturgy.
This - the 11 Venezuelan pastors + missionaries + seminary students representing 7 countries + members of all 4 DR congregations - brought a whole new meaning to hymns like The Church's One Foundation.
The Venezuelan pastors receiving the Lord's Supper together.
THEY surprised US with a rousing rendition of Beautiful Savior!
My pal Abner and I.
I grew more and more attached to them as the week wore on and wanted at least one picture with them!
We were truly a sight to behold at the airport yesterday...11 men in clerical collars re-configuring their luggage so as to maximize the Laser Airlines' weight allowance!
One final group picture, a prayer, and off they went!
We received word late last night that they had arrived safely at the mission in Caracas, all luggage in-hand. I'm thankful for the opportunity to have met them and heard their stories, and I pray that the time they spent here would continue to be a blessing in their lives and ministries.
Until next time, blessings!
